Heating and cooling circulation pumps and how they work

Circulation pumps are used specifically to distribute water (potable or non-potable), steam, condensate, etc. in a loop. They are also often used for industrial purposes to boost pressure. They come as pocket circulators or 3-piece assemblies which have a motor, bearing assembly and body. On smaller 3-piece assemblies, they come close coupled with the impeller attached to the motor shaft or coupler driven where the bearing assembly shaft and the motor shaft are joined by a coupler. The bearing assembly houses the mechanical seal to prevent water from leaking out. Most often the mechanical seal sits inside the bearing assembly however there are outside mechanical seals as well. The most common maintenance repairs are replacing the mechanical seal to keep the pump from leaking.

Heating and cooling circulation pumps in the home are typically small pocket circulators (1/25 HP and up ) and 3-piece circulators (1/12 HP and up) which can be repaired or replaced easily. We carry a complete line of pumps and parts for residential heating applications.

Some applications for heating and cooling circulation pumps include:

  • Hydronic Heating
  • Pressure Boosting
  • Condensate Pumps
